Whether you’re setting up a stall, sprucing up your storefront or launching a new location, banners are a great way to catch people’s eye. But how do you know which size and design works best for your business? We’re here to help you figure things out: from common banner sizes and banner types, to design and marketing tips. By the end, you’ll be all set to welcome customers in with confidence.
What are the types of banners?
Remember that corner shop that’s been around forever? Vinyl banners are just like that – timeless and reliable. The water- and fade-resistant material is designed for long term use. They’re also more affordable than other types of banners, which is great if you’re just starting out or want to maximise your budget.
A staple in outdoor advertising, mesh banners are made from a weatherproof, porous material that lets wind pass through without wrinkling or tearing. If you want to promote your business through the seasons, mesh banners are the hardiest ones of the bunch. Whether indoors or outdoors, they’ll get the job done.
If hanging’s not your style, pull-up banners have you covered. These upright banners are pre-assembled, so you can set them up in seconds. (You’ll have one less thing to worry about when it’s closing time.) They’re a good option for indoor displays such as mall pop-ups, reception areas and corporate events.

Small Banners
Usually starting from 50 x 90 cm, small banners are a cost-effective way to get noticed by anyone passing by. They’re great for sharing general information – like featuring promotional products, providing instructions for customers or labelling different sections in your store.
Medium Banners
Medium banners are usually 90 x 180 cm and above – the perfect size for bigger crowds at trade shows, festivals and more. If you’re setting up a booth, you can even drape them around your table for greater visibility.
Large Banners
If you want the most visibility out of your sign (and have the space and budget for it), large banner sizes are the way to go. Starting around 120 x 300 cm, they’ll be seen not just by pedestrians – but vehicles as well. They also give you more space to get your message across, so you can experiment with clever and bold advertising.
Design guidelines
We’ve got thousands of templates you can pick from to create your banner – thanks to our amazing designers. But you can upload your own design, too. It’s as simple as selecting an image or file on your computer, but here are some important guidelines to keep in mind.
Note: These measurements are for our standard 76 x 122 cm banners. Our other options have similar bleed and safe printing areas in relation to their actual size. You can always check the details on our banner product pages.
Bleed Area: 76.8 x 121.5 cm
If you’ve got a background colour or pattern, make sure it extends a bit beyond the actual size of the banner. That way, you’ll never end up with white borders.
Trim Size: 76.2 x 120.9 cm
Just like the name says, this is where we cut your postcards. We do our absolute best to make your banners centred, but be sure to check the safe printing area when completing your design.
Safe Printing Area: 75.6 x 120.3 cm
You probably have any important text or design elements within this area, which isn’t much smaller than the actual size of the banner. To guarantee nothing gets cut off, keep everything inside this box.
More banner design tips
Aside from placement and material choice, there are three main things to keep in mind when creating your banner:
- Font size
Generally, we recommend using a font size of 216 pt – which would be visible from 30 metres away for people with good eyesight. Need help choosing a font style? Learn all about the top 12 easy to read fonts in our blog.
- Font colour & background
Contrast is key when it comes to choosing the right colours for your banner. If you have a dark background, we recommend using lighter fonts – and vice versa. To increase brand awareness, we recommend using the same colour palette across your business logo and other marketing materials.
- Images
If you want to print images onto your banner, a balanced layout is key. For starters, we recommend choosing a high-resolution image for crisper results. Ideally, the image shouldn’t overshadow the text, and you’d want to keep things simple to avoid confusing your customers. To make sure your message is clear, make sure your banner has enough negative space between every element.
