Being a small business owner is already a full-time commitment. Add fatherhood into the mix, and the challenge (and reward) grows even bigger. This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating the dads who are not only building thriving businesses but also showing up every day for their families with dedication and heart.
In this special feature, we sat down with two inspiring small business owners, Mick Harding of Ngarga Warendj and Josh Peut of Coochie HydroGreen to hear their journeys and how they find balance between entrepreneurship and family life. Their stories shine a light on the resilience, creativity and care that define what it means to be a dad in business today.

Can you tell us about your business and how did it come to life?
Our business was born from a deep desire to share my culture in an authentic and meaningful way. It grew from the need to tell our stories in our own voice, preserving and celebrating who we are.
How has being a dad influenced the way you run your business?
Fatherhood has been a driving force behind our business. One of our core motivations was to build something lasting for our children and our community. Being a dad means I get to pass on our culture, teaching not only my own kids but also the children in our community about our heritage.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from balancing business and family life?
The most important lesson has been to prioritise family whenever possible. Business is important, but family is everything.
What legacy do you hope your kids see in your work?
I hope they see that they can choose their own path, and that we’ll always support them. Right now, both of our sons are involved in the business, which is incredibly special. As the first in our family to start a business, my hope is that it becomes a platform for them to learn, grow, and share our culture with both our community and beyond.
What advice can you give to those looking to start a business?
Start with purpose. Know why you’re doing it, and stay true to that. Be prepared to work hard, stay flexible, and always keep your values at the centre of everything you do.

The biggest lesson is that flexibility and time management are crucial. Finding harmony between family responsibilities and business demands is essential for success and well-being.
What legacy do you hope your kids see in your work?
I hope my kids see a legacy of resilience, integrity, and the importance of following one’s passion. I want them to know that hard work and dedication can lead to meaningful accomplishments.
